I, Antonya Johnson, am truly honored to have the pleasure of serving as the 2016-17 President of the Virgil Hawkins Bar Association. Our bar association has a rich history complete with trailblazers that have broken down barriers and paved the way for Black attorneys throughout Florida. Although a substantial amount of work has been accomplished, we are far from over with the fight for justice and equality. I have participated in various efforts with my local affiliate chapters to address a major crisis in Florida: Diversity on the Bench. I intend to continue these efforts through the VHFCNBA this year, while building on the accomplishments of our recent past presidents. I plan on continuing the successful projects from the previous year including the Florida Classic CLE, Know Your Rights Symposium, and Diversity and Inclusion Luncheon in addition to establishing new annual events such as a Judicial Reception at the Annual Florida Bar Convention. I also seek to foster a more significant presence within our affiliate chapters, community, and social outlets. It's my goal to remind Florida that the VHFCNBA is still here, still thriving, and still working. I'm fortunate to work with a group of incredible lawyers that will be dedicating their time on this year's executive board working toward a successful bar year. However, we can't do this alone. I invite you to become a member and would encourage you to get involved in one of our committees. As an organization, we are only as successful as our members. I look forward to serving you this year.
